Eugene’s 2 important museum exhibitions of 2014

Last year I exhibited two different types of work at both Singapore Art Museum and the National Museum. It was a really big deal for me though I realized I didn’t blog about them at all! So here are photos from each them.

Singapore Art Museum – Sensorium 360

I had the good fortune of exhibiting my Installation, The Overview Installation, as part of Singapore Art Museum (SAM)’s quarterly exhibitions from 31st July to 22 October 2014.

All three viewing modes were available namely, God view (Third person perspective), Vice Versa (Swapping Perspectives with your buddy) and Lizard Vision (having eyes at the side of your head)

The show had a constant flow of visitors everyday and I was told that there were queues for my installation and that people come back for more!

Gallery Sitters at Singapore Art Museum
Me with the gallery sitters who have been taking care of my equipment for the three month duration of the show! Thank you! They had to work the hardest at my piece compared to the other works in the show because they actually had to help visitors with the goggles and explain things to them.

This work went to TV! I think they did a good job documenting it too.

Dude Shirt

Grey Dude Shirt

Presenting my very own DUDE SHIRT! I’ve been looking everywhere for a soft grey T-shirt to make my first shirt with. I was really particular in my search. The T-shirt had to fulfil 3 strict dude criterias.

  1. Softness: I hate rough shirts, they get so scratchy! I wanted a shirt I could wear everywhere and also to be comfortable to even go to bed with. A sleep worthy shirt!
  2. Greyness: I wanted to parody that popular ash-grey ARMY T-shirt. The colour needed to be in the right………………… shade of grey…
  3. Thinness: I remember wearing those grey army T-shirts, they were too thick! Too thick for this (Singapore) weather. It needed my T-shirt material to be thin enough to keep cool but not too thin that it feels flimsy and cheap.

I’ve found the perfect T-shirt for me. I’m planning to make more. Please let me know if you want one

The Arrival of Venus (2012)

Arrival of Venus by Eugene Soh

Made in collaboration with Campus Magazine. Below are some behind-the-scenes moments from the shoot. Featuring J Star a.k.a. J* as Venus. This combination of 7 photographs was shot at East Coast Park with Marina Bay Sands in the background.

One of the challenges was to get the 2 flying characters to actually fly while hugging each other – so we decided we had to shoot everyone separately and then stick everyone together with Photoshop.

Gallery.sg in The Straits Times

Gallery.sg was mentioned in Singapore’s main local paper, The Straits Times, on the 29th of April, 2014. Proud day for the project! It was a huge article about the growing trend of art sales on the Internet. Gallery.sg is the only mentioned site that does not actually sell art.

“Although unique, the presence of Gallery.sg under-scores the varied, exciting landscape of art galleries in the digital age and it points to how two models of galleries, online and offline, sometimes conflate.”

The current show, The Web Art Show, on Gallery.sg will be open 24 hours till July. So do drop via your laptops/computers!

For those who missed the opening on the 19th of April, here is a video recorded by Randal Packer from Washington DC, during part of the 5 hour virtual event . It was 4am in the morning for him!

DUDE’S SHOW – Musings and Meditations on His Reality

My first solo show coming up guys!

Venue: OCBC Centre Branch, 65 Chulia Street, Singapore 049513
Dates: 12th – 31st August 2013

OCBC Arts Card presents a collection of photographic and video works from emerging Singaporean artist Eugene Soh. In his signature irreverent and humorous style, Soh confronts pertinent social and cultural issues with disregard for convention.

Included in this presentation is The Overview, an interactive installation based on Soh’s own “Eugene’s Cave” theory. The installation delivers an “out-of-body” experience that bids the participant re-think his or her own sense of perspective and reality.

Also on display will be the artist’s seminal parodic works, The Last Kopitiam and Venus and Grace. Firm favourites with the public, these works have garnered the 2012 Crowbar Award and 2013 Sony World Photography finalist award respectively.

Organised by Chan Hampe Galleries and supported by Asian Art Options.
